Assets and debts are the building blocks of your net worth. Accounts that track transactions can also feed cashflow and budgets.

Before adding one, confirm that the intended portfolio is selected. New items belong to the selected portfolio, and that portfolio’s reporting currency is used for totals and charts.

Add an asset

  1. Open Assets.
  2. Select Add asset.
  3. Choose a supported bank or brokerage connection, or select a manual option.
  4. For a manual item, choose its type and enter the requested name, value, date, and native currency.
  5. Choose whether to use Track transactions for budgeting when that option is shown.
  6. Save the asset.

Assets include cash, investments, pensions, property, vehicles, metals, collectables, and other items you own.

Add a debt

  1. Open Debts.
  2. Select Add debt.
  3. Choose a supported connection or add the debt manually.
  4. Enter the debt type, name, balance owed, and native currency.
  5. Choose whether to use Track transactions for budgeting.
  6. Save the debt.

Debts include mortgages, loans, credit cards, and other liabilities. When the form asks for the balance owed, enter it as a positive number; Plutus stores it so that it reduces net worth.

Choose the tracking behaviour

For manual assets and debts, Track transactions for budgeting determines how updates are recorded:

  • Off: update the value or balance directly without adding activity to transactions or budgets. This suits property, pensions, investments, vehicles, mortgages, and other high-level net-worth items.
  • On: record updates as transactions and include them in budgets. This suits current accounts, regularly used credit cards, and other day-to-day financial activity.

Choose carefully: the tracking mode cannot be changed after the item is created.

Understand portfolio and account currencies

An account’s native currency describes the value held or owed in that account. The selected portfolio’s currency is the reporting currency used to display combined totals, charts, and converted asset or debt values.

Changing a portfolio currency does not rewrite native account currencies or value history. If you need a separate financial picture or reporting currency, create another portfolio from the portfolio menu in the sidebar.

Edit account details

Open an asset or debt and use its edit action to review available details such as its name, owner, notes, classification, current value, and display settings. Some connected fields come from the provider and may not be editable.

Check that the item remains in the intended portfolio and that its native currency and classification match the real financial position.

Archive an account

Use the item actions when an asset or debt is no longer active. Archiving removes it from the active view while preserving information that historical reporting may still depend on.

For connected accounts, changing connection or synchronisation settings may stop future updates without removing previously imported data.

Confirm the result

Return to Assets, Debts, or Net Worth and verify that:

  • the item appears in the selected portfolio;
  • assets add to net worth and debts reduce it;
  • the native and reporting currencies are as expected;
  • transaction tracking matches the item’s intended use; and
  • the same real account has not been added twice.

Common problems

  • A debt classified as an asset will make net worth too high.
  • A connected account and a manual copy can duplicate the same balance.
  • A connected balance may need time to complete its first synchronisation.
  • If the wrong tracking mode was chosen, create the item again with the correct mode before adding history.
  • If a total uses the wrong reporting currency, change Currency from the portfolio menu.
