Recurring items represent money you expect on a schedule, such as rent, subscriptions, salary, or insurance. They help you anticipate activity without confusing expectation with settled bank data.

Create a recurring item

  1. Open Recurring.
  2. Select Add recurring item.
  3. Enter a clear name or payee.
  4. Choose whether it is money in or money out.
  5. Enter the expected amount and account.
  6. Set the schedule and next expected date.
  7. Choose how Plutus should handle occurrences.
  8. Save.

Use the actual billing schedule rather than an approximate monthly date where possible.

Choose how an item is handled

Plutus can support different behavior depending on the account and recurring item:

  • Create automatically is useful for predictable manual activity. Plutus creates the expected transaction on schedule.
  • Watch for bank transactions is useful when a connected account will import the real transaction. Plutus watches for a likely match rather than creating a duplicate.

For bank-connected accounts, watching is usually safer when the date or amount can vary.

Review matches and changes

Check recurring items when a provider changes its description, a bill amount changes, or an expected item remains unmatched. Update the schedule rather than creating overlapping items.

Pause or end an item when the real commitment stops.

Confirm the result

The item should appear on the expected schedule with the correct account and direction. After the next occurrence, confirm that Plutus created or matched one transaction—not both.

Common problems

  • Automatic creation and bank import can produce duplicates if both are enabled for the same activity.
  • Variable bills need a realistic matching tolerance.
  • A changed payment date may require updating the next occurrence.
